We welcome applications from students enrolled at other Universities to join the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh for a short-term research visit. About visiting research students As a Visiting Research (VRes) Student, you are currently registered in a degree programme at your home institution and are considering a non-credit bearing research visit at the University of Edinburgh. We accept undergraduate, postgraduate taught, or postgraduate research students interested in conducting research under the supervision of an academic member of staff at the School of GeoSciences. Please note, the maximum duration of research visits is 12 months. The visit requires on-campus attendance and is not suitable for remote/hybrid collaboration.All visiting students must be registered in EUCLID, the University of Edinburgh student record system, unless the duration of the visit is less than two weeks. Once registered, you will have access to courses, supervision, library and other facilities as agreed with your host supervisor. We cannot provide fixed desk space to visiting research students but you are welcome to use available desks in PGR study spaces within the School of GeoSciences estate. All related requests and enquiries should be directed to the GeoSciences PGR office at pgrsupport.geos@ed.ac.uk Deadlines There are two categories of visiting research students:Visiting Research Students staying for less than or up to twelve weeks:You will not be charged a tuition fee and are not subject to the university’s English language entry requirements. Please apply at least 4 to 8 weeks in advance of the start date of your visit.Visiting Research Students staying for more than twelve weeks and up to and including twelve months:You will be charged a tuition fee and required to meet the university’s English language entry requirements. Please apply at least 12 to 16 weeks in advance of the start date of your visit, especially if you need to complete immigration processes. Application process To apply as a Visiting Research Student, follow these steps:Find a Supervisor:First, contact an academic staff member in your field and secure their agreement to supervise you. You can find a list of potential supervisors at the link below:Finding a supervisor Submit Your Application:Once a supervisor agrees to host you, submit the application form below along with required supporting documents:Application formConfirmation of registration at your home institution (this document must not be older than 6 months). A supporting statement from your home institution supervisor.A supporting statement from your GeoSciences supervisor (included directly on the application form or as a separate document).Proof of English language competence (for visits over 12 months).Either you or your UoE GeoSciences supervisor should send the relevant form, required documents and confirmation of your funding source to the GeoSciences PGR office at pgrsupport.geos@ed.ac.uk. After all documents are submitted and your application is approved, the PGR office will register you on EUCLID and send you confirmation of the visit along with an offer letter by email. Tuition fees Tuition fees apply for visits of more than twelve weeks and up to a year.Visiting PGR student fees English language requirements (for students staying over 12 weeks) Visiting Research Students staying over twelve weeks must provide evidence that they meet the minimum English language entry requirements, as outlined in the Degree Finder for PhD programmes within the School of GeoSciences.
