Visiting research students

There are two categories of visiting research students:

1. Visiting Research Students staying for less than or up to twelve weeks:

   You will not be charged a tuition fee and are not subject to the university’s English language entry requirements. Please apply at least 4 to 8 weeks in advance of the start date of your visit.

2. Visiting Research Students staying for more than twelve weeks and up to and including twelve months:

   You will be charged a tuition fee and required to meet the university’s English language entry requirements. Please apply at least 12 to 16 weeks in advance of the start date of your visit, especially if you need to complete immigration processes.

To apply as a Visiting Research Student, follow these steps:

• Find a Supervisor:

  First, contact an academic staff member in your field and secure their agreement to supervise you. You can find a list of potential supervisors at the link below:

•  Submit Your Application:

  Once a supervisor agrees to host you, submit the application form below along with required supporting documents:

  • Application form
  • Confirmation of registration at your home institution (this document must not be older than 6 months). 
  • A supporting statement from your home institution supervisor.
  • A supporting statement from your GeoSciences supervisor (included directly on the application form or as a separate document).
  • Proof of English language competence (for visits over 12 months).

Either you or your UoE GeoSciences supervisor should send the relevant form, required documents and confirmation of your funding source to the GeoSciences PGR office at pgrsupport.geos@ed.ac.uk. After all documents are submitted and your application is approved, the PGR office will register you on EUCLID and send you confirmation of the visit along with an offer letter by email.
