Emma shares her experience of studying the MSc Energy, Society and Sustainability. Name Emma Persson Degree MSc Energy, Society and Sustainability Year of graduation 2020 Image My time at University I started the MSc directly after graduating with my undergraduate degree. I studied Economics and Environmental Studies in the US while also playing collegiate tennis. Originally from Sweden, I loved getting to know a new culture and place in the US and was keen to keep exploring and learning in the UK. I was very interested in the connection between energy and climate change and the effects that an energy transition will have on communities globally. I chose Scotland as I thought the School of Geosciences had so much to offer - I wasn’t disappointed! Learning so much from dedicated professors and peers, and joining in on extra-curricular activities, such as sports and societies, let me meet many people outside my programme and school. Also, being in Edinburgh and Scotland was a fantastic experience - the proximity to nature, the city's old architecture, the friendly people and culture all contributed to a year I will never forget! My experience since leaving University I finished my degree in August 2020 and have since started working at an energy company with renewables engagement. I work with stakeholders, getting them involved and invested in what the company is working with, while also working with the climate change department on contributing to climate policy drafting and board organisation. It's been a challenging start working remotely and not going into the office because of the pandemic, but an experience that's been well worth it and a position that the MSc prepared me for. My Covid-19 experience The Covid-19 experience has not changed my goals or what I value. On the contrary, it strengthened my drive to pursue a career in transitioning the energy system and bringing all communities along for the ride. We have realised the importance of a green recovery post-pandemic, and this MSc and career path couldn't be more fitting for achieving that. Alumni wisdom This might sound cheesy, but follow what you deep down believe is your mission to bring to the world. Do what you are passionate about and keep reaching for the goals you set yourself both during your degree and after in your career. This article was published on 2024-07-01
