Professor Steve Brusatte: Chief Scientific Consultant on new BBC Walking With Dinosaurs series

Professor Steve Brusatte, Professor of Palaeontology and Evolution at the University of Edinburgh has helped to bring prehistoric life back to the screen as the chief scientific consultant for the new BBC revival of Walking With Dinosaurs.

The six-part series, which premiered on BBC One on 25 May 2025, is a modern reimagining of the groundbreaking 1999 documentary. Combining cinematic storytelling with cutting-edge palaeontological science, the series invites viewers to experience the age of dinosaurs like never before, giving audiences a window into a long-lost world.

Breathing new life into Walking With Dinosaurs

Internationally recognised for his research on the anatomy, genealogy and evolution of dinosaurs, mammals and other fossil organisms, Professor Brusatte played a key role as Chief Scientific Consult, ensuring scientific accuracy throughout the new series. This second series of Walking with Dinosaurs ensures that everything is underpinned entirely by scientific research, with Steve’s expertise and his consultations with the series writers and researchers guiding the creation of a series of ‘dino-bibles’ for the visual effects team.  These covered every detail of how the dinosaurs should look, sound and behave.

I fondly recall watching the original Walking With Dinosaurs 25 years ago, when I was in high school growing up in America. It sparked my interest in dinosaurs and led me to become a palaeontologist. So it’s been so much fun to work on the new series, and I can guarantee that the input from me and many other scientists makes this the most accurate and scientifically up-to-date television program on dinosaurs, and I hope that will inspire a new generation!

The revival of Walking With Dinosaursalso arrives at a time when palaeontology is experiencing a renaissance, with up to 50 new species being identified every year. Scientists are uncovering increasingly detailed insights into dinosaur biology, behaviour and ecology.

Public Engagement with Science

As well as Walking With Dinosaurs he has consulted on various films and documentaries, including Jurassic World Dominion, the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth movie premiering in July, and National Geographic’s T. rex Autopsy, bringing scientific insights to mainstream media.

By helping to bring accurate, engaging portrayals of prehistoric life to the screen, Professor Brusatte continues to inspire the next generation of scientists – and deepen public understanding of how life on Earth has evolved.
