MSc Geographical Information Science (GIS)

Satellite tech lighting up the sky

Awards:MSc
Study modes:Full-timePart-time
Accreditation:Yes
Funding opportunities:Yes

GIS is changing the way the world works. Our successful MSc Geographical Information Science was the first of its type in the world.

It has a heritage of over 30 years and approaching 1000 graduates. Today, we continually refresh the programme to keep you abreast of the latest technological changes and industry trends.

This programme reflects on the use of geospatial technologies in the detection and mitigation of climate change, sustainability and social responsibility.

Our MSc is one of the largest masters programmes in GIS in the world. We offer foundation courses if you are new to the field and advanced courses if you want to specialise in particular areas.

So whether you want to build apps for your smartphone or solve some of the most significant environmental problems on the planet, this programme is for you.

Why study with us?

Extensive networks

Unrivalled opportunities to connect with GIS professionals and industry, embedded within the programme.

Tailored pathways

Tailored pathways through course options offer flexibility to specialise in particular areas.

MSc Earth Observation and Geoinformation Management

Awards:MSc
Study modes:Full-timePart-time
Funding opportunities:Yes

Earth observation involves gathering information about the Earth's physical, chemical, and biological systems using remote sensing technologies such as satellites.

It is rapidly growing in social, economic and political importance by helping us better understand and manage Earth and its environment.

Our MSc degree provides you with the theoretical and practical skills to use and analyse Earth observation data in conjunction with broader skills in handling geospatial data.

We continually refresh the programme to keep you abreast of the latest technologies and anticipate trends and innovative ideas essential in this rapidly growing sector.

We work with international groups to develop the next generation of satellite sensors, and our academics are part of science teams for European Space Agency's 'Biomass Mission', and NASA's GEDI LiDAR on the international space station.

Why study with us?

Field trips

Gain extensive experience applying Earth Observation data ‘in the field’ through fully-funded field-trips.

Internationally renowned

Learn from research-active academics with international reputations at the forefront of the latest technologies and trends.

What do our students think?

Innovative research

We are leading the way in harnessing the potential of Earth observation in the era of big data, using drone and satellite observations.

For example, we:

  • pioneered research in process-based modelling, data assimilation and remote sensing of forests
  • are world leaders in techniques used to estimate global terrestrial carbon fluxes from satellite data
  • showed through satellite observations of ice-sheet and glacier melting that Greenland today is losing ice seven times faster than two decades ago
  • have won numerous awards, including from the UK and European Space Agencies
