Established in 1783, the RSE utilises the expertise of its 1,800 Fellows to advise policymakers and address key societal issues.

Of the 43 researchers elected in 2026, this includes 15 from the University of Edinburgh. The Fellows were elected in recognition of excellence in their disciplines, and an ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge for the benefit of society as a whole.

Professor Dibben is the Director of the Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research and the Longitudinal Studies Centre Scotland. His research involves quantitative health geography, with a particular interest in analysing administrative data to explain and understand patterns of poverty, deprivation and inequality and their impact on lifelong health and wellbeing.

On receiving the Fellowship, Professor Dibben stated:

I am honoured and excited to have been elected into the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This recognition is especially meaningful given the importance of the work my teams and I have been doing to make sensitive data more secure, more useful and more impactful for research, training and evidence-based policy. I am deeply grateful to my colleagues — without their expertise, commitment and collaboration, none of this would have been possible.
