Undergraduate degrees

Study the world through natural, physical and social sciences and understand the environmental challenges we face today with our flexible and interdisciplinary undergraduate degree programmes.

As a student at Edinburgh, you will learn from world-leading academics, conducting ground-breaking research that directly informs the teaching you receive, as they share their discoveries with you. Through our hands-on and innovative approaches to learning, we'll equip you with the skills, insights and perspectives to enhance your employability and career prospects.

Our flexible and interdisciplinary degree programmes, world-class facilities and award-winning support services combine to ensure your experience at University is exceptional and unique.

Through our undergraduate degrees you can:

  • You can explore many natural and physical science subjects such as maths, physics, chemistry, biology and geography in order to understand the changes that are happening to our planet, whether that be naturally or as a direct result of the actions of people across the world.
  • You can also study the world through the social sciences to understand the relationships between people and their social, cultural, political and economic worlds, and our interactions with the Earth.

When you choose to study with us, you’ll find that our degrees take four years to complete. This is an approach that’s common not just to Scotland but across Europe and in the USA.

Our four-year degree structure gives you a broader and more flexible education, allowing you to try a range of subjects before specialising in your honours years. Even if you know exactly what you want to do, you can study additional subjects and add depth to your education. By the time you graduate your breadth of knowledge will be highly prized by employers, giving you the best chance of success in your chosen field.

Earth sciences enable you to examine all aspects of our planet, from its formation and the evolution of life through to present-day surface and environmental processes.

Our ecological and environmental sciences degrees are ideal if you are passionate about interactions between humans and the natural world and our impact on the planet.

The core of geography is the study of how our planet works. Our geography degrees span the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities to address environmental, social and political issues.

Field trips and fieldwork are at the heart of our programmes. We know that getting out into the world is essential for understanding how it works.

The School of GeoSciences has an agreement with several Chinese universities which allows students to study a degree for two years in China, and then transfer to the University of Edinburgh to complete a further two years of study.
