Professor Wyn Williams receives 2026 Edward Bullard Lecture award

AGU is the world's largest Earth and space science association, and celebrates individuals and teams through its annual Honors and Recognition program for their accomplishments in research, education, science communication, and outreach.

The Edward Bullard Lecture, is named after geophysicist Edward Crisp Bullard, and is one of 80 AGU Section Awards and Lectures presented to individuals in recognition of their advancement and promotion of Earth and space sciences.

Professor Wyn Williams receives this award in recognition of his work as a pioneering mineral magnetist, whose research has reshaped understanding of how natural magnetic minerals record ancient fields. His three-dimensional micromagnetic modelling revealed the importance of complex vortex-domain states in magnetic materials, while his leadership in developing the open-source MERRILL software has provided Earth scientists with powerful tools to model magnetic behaviour in realistic mineral grains. His work underpins improved interpretation of palaeomagnetic and planetary magnetic records, from terrestrial rocks and archaeological materials to nanoscale particles capable of retaining memories from the very beginning of the Solar System.

As recipient of this award, Professor Williams will be recognised at AGU’s 2026 Annual Meeting, AGU26, which will convene more than 25,000 attendees from over 100 countries in San Francisco, CA, and online everywhere 7-11 December 2026.
