Pay as you go access

Guidance on access to the facility for UK-based and international researchers.

The facility welcomes academic researchers (UK-based and international) and commercial customers to access the facility on a charged basis. If you would like to access the facility, please contact us at ionprobe@ed.ac.uk to discuss project feasibility, timeline and requirements. Support letters for grant applications can be provided on request. 

Research eligible for NERC-funding can also apply for direct access to the facility via NERC application. NERC-funded projects cannot pay for access but need to follow the NERC application process.

Costs for use

The ion microprobe time is charged per hour at the rates listed below. Access is subject to availability.

  • The academic must be part of a research organization.
  • Access is dependent on available time and subject to approval by Facility staff.
  • Additional charges may apply if an extended scientific report is required.
Service facility for commercial work£300
  • Access and project feasibility should be discussed with Facility staff.
  • Access is dependent on available time. We prioritize academic research.
  • Additional charges may apply if an extended scientific report is required.
Foreign (non UK) academic collaboration with NERC-funded UK researcher£75
  • Please follow NERC access procedures.
  • UK scientist (excluding IMF staff) puts forward the application (PI of the application) but the science is partially funded by a non UK research body.
  • If a student's PhD is involved and the student's thesis is solely registered/awarded at a non UK university, then an invoice for 50% of the cost (£75 per hour) will be sent to the PI of the application. The application has to be peer reviewed via the Facilities Steering Committee.
