About us

We combine the strength of research groupings across Edinburgh to ensure the responsible use of Earth Resources.

The planet is home to a wide variety of natural resources.

Our researchers are dedicated to understanding not only how to exploit these resources most efficiently - but how to do so responsibly for the benefit of all.

We combine the strength of several established research groups across Edinburgh that focus on issues surrounding the responsible use of earth resources.

Our interdisciplinary research is built on strong core disciplines that include:

  • ecology
  • environmental sciences
  • geography
  • geology
  • geophysics
  • meteorology
  • oceanography

With over 370 academics, researchers, and research students, we are the largest grouping of geoscientists in the UK. Our 'Earth Systems and Environmental Science' was ranked top Research Power in 'Earth Systems and Environmental Science' in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.

Our group is exceptionally well-equipped with the latest technologies to enable research at the forefront of the Earth Resources field. For example, we have a wide range of high-tech facilities for the analysis of rocks, minerals and fluids, for isotope analysis and measurement of the physical properties of rocks.

We also have excellent facilities and expertise in scientific computing. In addition, we place a strong emphasis on field measurement techniques in ecological, atmospheric and Earth sciences.

Some of these include:

  • Chemical analysis facilities
  • Electron Probe MicroAnalysis Facility
  • ICP Laboratory
  • NERC Field Spectroscopy Facility
  • NERC Geophysical Equipment Facility
  • NERC Ion Microprobe Facility
  • NERC Recognised Experimental Geoscience Facility
  • NERC Recognised Airborne Geosciences
  • Optical Microscopes Laboratory
  • Organic Geochemistry Facility
  • Scanning Electron Microscope Facility
  • School Geophysical Laboratories
  • Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC)
  • Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry - Wolfson Laboratory
  • X-ray Diffraction Facility
  • X-ray Fluorescence
