The Cryosphere research group combines field, satellite remote sensing, geophysical, geochronological and numerical modelling techniques to investigate how the cryosphere will be affected by predicted climate change, and to inform possible consequences on our society with respect to sea-level rise and water resources. We actively explore across both polar regions, with particular activity in West Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea and southwest Greenland. Our polar research extends from monitoring and modelling terrestrial ice losses to thinning ice shelves, diminishing sea ice and the impacts of these processes on marine biogeochemistry and physical oceanography. Our work uses Earth observation systems to monitor what is happening to mountain glaciers to help inform projections of future glacially-fed water and power resources relevant to millions of people. We apply geomorphology and geochronology to constrain how rapidly past ice caps retreated to understand better how rapidly the Earth’s remaining ice masses will respond to future climate warming. Research on seasonal snow cover combines field studies at Arctic and Alpine sites, remote sensing and modelling. Our work ranges on scales from landscapes (where snow influences the activities of people, animals and plants living in cold regions), to mountain ranges (where snow stores and releases essential water resources), to continents (where snow-atmosphere interactions shape the climate). Our people Our research is thanks to the hard work of the people in this group. These will be links to research case studies that are/will be in the "Featured Research" section. This could be research that members of your group are most proud of, feel like it reflects best on the range of research undertaken, or would be most attractive to prospective research students. ] This article was published on 2025-07-15
