60 years of Ecological Sciences

Ecological Science undergraduate degrees at the University of Edinburgh are 60 years old in 2026!  

To mark this significant anniversary, alumni from the programmes in all their variants* over the past 60 years are warmly invited to a celebration event at the University with former staff, and current staff and students on Saturday 23-Sunday 24 May 2026. 

*Ecological and Environmental Sciences; Ecological and Environmental Sciences with Management; Ecological Science with Management; Ecological Science with Honours in: Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economy; Conservation and Ecological Management; Ecology; Environmental Science; Forestry, Land-use Ecology; Resource Management; Wildlife Management; Wildlife and Fisheries Management, etc.

Saturday 23 May

Symposium

Saturday's symposium will include:

  • Talks about the history of the Ecological Science undergraduate degree programmes by former staff
  • Talks about the programme today and outlook by current staff and students
  • Short talks from Ecological Science alumni reflecting on the degree programme and where it took them
  • An engaging keynote scientific talk
  • Drinks and canapés reception
  • King's Buildings campus tour, along with unveiling of plaque on commemorative tree. 

The symposium is free and open to alumni, staff and students.

Sunday 24 May

Field trips

On Sunday, we offer the chance to attend one of three local field trips in and around Edinburgh. Field trips are free to attend, and are open to accompanying guests (with a maximum of one guest for trip 3).

  1. Behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh (10.30–12.30)

  1. Edinburgh Living Landscape sites: Wildflower Meadow along the Cramond foreshore, with optional visit to the Boardwalk cafe on Marine Drive (10.30–12.30)

  1. University’s Forest and Peatland Programme site at Drumbrae (09.30–16.00)

    Coach transport will be provided to and from Pollock Halls. Bring a packed lunch and drinks, and clothing and footwear for mud and wet, windy weather. Site access involves walking up and down slopes and uneven ground so is not suitable for those with limited mobility.

    40 places available on a first-come, first-served basis. Open to one accompanying guest.

Diamond Anniversary dinner

19:00 - 22:30, South Hall, Pollock Halls

Open to one accompanying guest.

Join us to celebrate the end of the weekend at our diamond anniversary dinner.

You will be sat with guests and other attendees from your year of graduation.

Starter: Oak smoked Scottish salmon with capers, shallots & crème fraiche (gluten free option available)

Main: Roast ballotine of chicken, bubble & squeak, glazed vegetables & red wine jus (gluten free option available)

Dessert:  Raspberry & white chocolate cranachan, raspberry sauce (v)

Registration

Registration will open Wednesday 25 February, and will close Monday 13 April.

Please note that registration is opening a week later than previous advertised. We apologise for the delay.

This event is free to attend, except the celebration dinner, which will cost £40 per person.
